Resilience Essay
Peace, Love and Prosperity
The two people that I am about to talk about are resilience are very inspiring and they always will be. They both are extremely peaceful and they can do anything if they believe it. The first person I am going to talk about is Bob Marley. He is resilient because he was shot and he recovered within a couple days and still spread his message.
Bob Marley was shot one day before his concert while he was on tour. He recovered 3 days later and he continued his tour. He talked all about peace and love. He was a laid back guy and he always fought for what was Just. “Don't gain the world and lose your soul, wisdom is better than silver or gold.” That was one of Bob Marley’s famous quotes and he is basically saying live above and don’t loose your virtues. Bob Marley inspired our nation through something that we all listen too every day. The radio. His music was broadcasted through the radios and millions of people heard him. They hear his words of love and peace and most of all prosperity. “Herb is the healing of the nation, alcohol is the destruction.” That quote right there is one of the things that bob Marley found worn with our nation. Our nation had a serious alcohol problem as well as many other problems and Bob Marley was one of the few that actually tried to help. There are also less famous civilians that tried to help by just believing in the right things and making their fare share of contributing.
One of those people was my grandfather. He was a man of peace of prosperity and he always told me “ if you don’t do something, nothing will happen.” What that meant to me is that if you don’t act or contribute the world will be helpless. He also said, “ if you don’t care then you have no heart.” To me that is so true because an average person drives a car at least a couple times a day and they are forgetting about what that is doing to our world. They are leaving a small carbon footprint but since almost everyone else is leaving a small carbon footprint they all add up. My grandfather has gone through rough patches and smooth patches but whatever the situation is he has always learned something and has gained knowledge from whatever has happened. He is kind of old but he is extremely wise and he sees what everyone else doesn’t see. He sees our problems and he tried to do something about it, just like a famous singer named Bob Marley.
Both of the men that I have been talking about have changed my life either in a small way or maybe a big way but the important thing is that they both believe in peace and love. They both definitely have a great soul and amazing hearts. You can learn a lot of inspiring things from these men and as I continue to study them I will see better and better things each day. Just don’t forget that these men may have affected your life and you may just take it for granted.

Short Story
Title: Under the Gun
Author: Karan Daryanani

Genre: Action/Thriller
Pages: 10

Mentor Texts: “Red Eye” the movie: the whole plot of that story was to kill an important political figure and the whole idea about getting the mayor killed from someone on the inside, is just cool. So that idea really stood out and I didn’t realize that this is the cause of me writing a story. It’s just like a memory in my head that I had forgotten about and suddenly it comes out in my writing.

“The Sentinel” the movie: This is the main influence on my story. They the Chinese got a Chinese man that is half American to work for the secret service and slowly get trusted and then the kills the president, or at least he tries to but he doesn’t succeed.
Audience: 15 and up because it has a little language and it is a little scary and little kids wont exactly understand the content.
Writing Process: my writing process is a little different from everyone else’s. For my writing process I spent the first week just brainstorming ideas and characters, kind of trying to look at the world in the way that my characters would because I have such diverse characters in my story. After that I wrote a first draft, then I got it peer edited and then I made the changes. Next I needed a teacher review. My teacher reviewed it and I am still making the changes that she suggested.
Publishing Process: I intend to pair up with Adam because our stories are a little similar. Their genres are the same, thriller, and we came up with this whole idea about how we are going to make our pages and our stories stand out. After we combined our stories and put it into an appealing format we are going to send it to the New Yorker and see if they will publish it.

My Querencia Clipboard

MY QUERENCIA
The Adrenaline is rushing through my veins as I prepare to serve. “The pressure is on, Karan.” I think to myself. As the racket meets with the ball I feet like I have forgotten about everything except tennis. I forget about school, my friends, my social life and my memories. I feel as if I am the only one on earth aside from my opponent. I block out the crowd in my head and just play. All I remember is the fact that I am playing tennis and I am keen on winning. In my mind, I am wishing my opponent good luck before he realizes that I am about to kick his….
When I am on the tennis court, I always feel safe because of the fact that it just feels right to play tennis: the power you have to put into your spin; the topspin or the backspin you have to put on the ball to confuse your opponent; the little biong noise that you hear when the racket meets with the ball. That fact right there is why tennis is my querencia. You can’t just hit the ball, you have to do certain things to control where the ball goes. What I love about tennis is the fact that any small detail can mess you up. For example, if you don’t draw the power from the left leg on the forehand then the ball won’t even make it over the net because you aren’t putting enough power in it. So, you have to get the fundamentals down before you start advancing. Another sport that you draw your power from is skateboarding. And it just happens to be my second querencia.
Skateboarding is my querencia because it feels good to have the wind blowing on your face when you are skating down a hill. When I skateboard I forget about all my worries, all your homework and all of your problems. Instead of riding because you’re bored, you ride to get away from everything and everyone. When I ride and feel al the little rocks in the road, it calms me down. I feel extremely safe riding my Santa Cruiser down a hill, or on a flat surface because I don’t need to worry about anything. I listen to my Ipod and just skate because I want to get away from life.
So if I want to get away from everything or just have fun skateboarding is the way to go for me. If I want to feel safe or lose myself then tennis is the way to go for me. My two querencia’s are very important to me and they always will be.
